Local hikers to enjoy March fresh air

Later this week, the Pacolet Area Conservancy (PAC) will be hosting a six-mile hike near Greenville at Paris Mountain State Park.

This is the second hike of the Spring Hiking Series and will be led by Pam Torlina, director of stewardship and land protection for the PAC. It will be a moderate to strenuous hike that loops along the trails for Kanuga, Sulphur Springs, and Brissy Ridge.

The trail will start with a steady climb that parallels a stream, eventually leading to a dam. It follows the stream with views of a waterfall, before heading to top of the ridge. Then, the trail follows the ridge line, descends, and goes up again through the forest, which returns hikers to the starting point.

Paris Mountain State Park was once a watershed for the City of Greenville and was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression in 1935. Its centerpiece is large rock, and it features large areas of hardwood forest.

The hike is on Friday, March 6, beginning at 8:30 am at the Gowensville Spinx, which is at the intersection of Highways 11 and 14.
