What's Happening in Greenville, SC…

Greenville recently had a ground breaking ceremony for the long awaited 60-acre Unity Park destined for the western part of downtown.

Approximately 50 people were on hand as a former maintenance garage’s walls were knocked down by a bulldozer to make way for the park. This part of Greenville is quickly gentrifying, and much of the ground-breaking ceremony addressed this issue.

The city has, for most of a decade, been acquiring land and within the last year has secured 10 additional acres to accompany the previously attained 50. The already large 60-acre site might still grow by a few additional acres.

Visible from the downtown central business district, an observation tower approximately 10 stories high, complete with a surrounding plaza, will offer views of the mountains beyond Greenville’s borders. The cost of the tower and plaza is estimated at $7m.

Points of interest, such as the planned for Unity Park tower, are usually include in Brochures promoting the community.

Fully outfitted, the bill for Unity Park will come to about $73m. Already, the project has secured $40m of which $35.3m came from Greenville. The city’s commitment breaks down as $28 million from hospitality tax, which comes from tourism, and $7.3 million in storm-water and utility line burial funds.

It was over a century ago the idea for the park was first bandied about, and Unity Park is now expected to be ready to welcome visitors by 2021.
