Despite not even being a candidate a few short months ago, J.H. “Howie” Thompson is now the City of Greenville’s new Chief of Police.
The announcement was made official by City Manager John McDonough in a low-key ceremony at Greenville’s Law Enforcement Center last Friday, October 30. To add to the celebration, it was also Thompson’s birthday.
Thompson has been with the Greenville Police Department (GDP) since 1997 and rose through the ranks over more than 20 years to become Deputy Police Chief in 2019. After the resignation of Chief Ken Miller in December of 2019, Thompson became Interim Police Chief.
When the search started for a new police chief, Thompson’s name wasn’t even on the list. Civic officials began a cross-country search for the ideal candidate and conducted surveys with the public and with other members of the GDP, asking what the most important attributes should be in the new chief.
The global pandemic put an abrupt end to the search process, and Thompson remained acting Police Chief for a total of 10 months. During that time he impressed city officials with his integrity, his support from within the GDP, and his knowledge of some of the most important issues in the community.
