Greenville group goes back to Bach

After operating for 34 years in Columbia until 2014, the South Carolina Bach Choir returned last October to Greenville as S.C. Bach, making its official debut before a capacity crowd at the Daniel Chapel at Furman University.

Now, in the upcoming weeks, the group will be hosting three music programs, 30 minutes in length, to make itself known to the audience in the Upstate. According to David Rhyne, the new artistic director of S.C. Bach, the group will be focused on performing only the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. He added that he believes it is the only music organization in the state that is devoted to the music of the composer.

Eventually, the group will highlight other composers of the Baroque, Renaissance and Medieval periods of music, filling a void, as Rhyne comments, of music that is rarely heard in the Upstate.

The upcoming performances scheduled start on March 4, with Rhyne performing an organ recital of Bach’s early works at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. This will be followed by cellist Leslie Kilstofte offering an unaccompanied Bach suite for cello on Saturday, March 19 and finishing with Gail Ann Schroeder, playing the viola, and harpsichordist Barbara performing on Friday April 15. The second and third concerts will be at M. Judson Books in downtown Greenville.
