An elevated personal automated transportation system for Greenville was recently discussed at a GSA Business Power Event.
According to chairman of the Greenville County Economic Development Corp. and a Greenville County councilman, Fred Payne, this would provide an option for transportation for visitors and residents, improve the current infrastructure of the city, and lead to economic development.
The automated transit system would be 22 miles in length and consist of personal pod cars that riders can use to get from one point to another.
Woodrow ‘Woody’ Willard Jr., a commissioner with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, added that this is a unique approach of getting people among urban areas, and an alternative to widening Interstates 85 and 26. It also is one way to handle air quality and other issues resulting from the use of regular cars.
Mike Lester, president and CEO of Taxi 2000 based in Minnesota, who had bid on a similar project for the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, added that many of the components for such a transit system already exist, so that the cost for 22 miles would be only about $300 to $400 million, as opposed to $1bn for building 10 to 15 miles of a light rail system.
