Goodwill Industries recently received a $1.08 million grant from the United States Department of Labor for the YouthBuild Greenville program which will help 60 at-risk, out of school youth between the ages of 17 and 24.
Those selected to participate in the program will earn a high school diploma or GED and be able to advance to employment of a career-oriented nature or post-secondary education. The program will last 40 months, during which time participants will learn construction skills by renovating or building homes for homeless or low income families or individuals.
According to president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina, Patrick Michaels, the participants will come from such areas as Greer, Berea, Greenville, and Wade Hampton in Greenville County. It will provide them an opportunity to learn skills, get an education, and become prepared for careers in the construction industry and be of great benefit to the community at large for the future.
Already on the slate for the YouthBuild effort are three houses from Habitat for Humanity and renovation of the old Woodside Mill offices.
The first cohort of participants in the YouthBuild program will begin this month. Most likely, Goodwill is turning to Print companies to help with the printing of Flyers and other materials that can be distributed in the selected areas so as to find appropriate participants in the program.
