New Years tradition continues in Philadelphia

The 116th Mummers Parade is taking place in Philadelphia on New Year’s Day.

This popular parade begins at City Hall then travels south on Broad Street to Washington Avenue. Judging takes place at 15th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Mummers compete in five categories including Comics, Wench Brigades and Fancies. It attracts thousands of visitors to the area each year. To serve the crowd, there are several food trucks along the parade route.

Prior to New Year’s Day, visitors can attend Mummersfest at the Pennsylvania Convention Center which is a behind the scenes look at preparations. This 50-minute tour will take place from December 28 to 31 and costs $4. Visitors can try on costumes, make and take crafts and take part in many other activities.

After the parade, is the Fancy Brigade Finale and Mummersfest. There are two shows and 12 Fancy Brigades will perform. The later show is when they will be judged on choreography and costumes.

Some of the mummers may choose to make products such as Banners provided by a Philadelphia Print company an important part of their costumes.

The Mummers Parade will take place on January 1 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The Fancy Brigade Finale and Mummerfest will take place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center at 11:30 AM and 5:00 PM. Tickets are $25 each. Call 267-441-3157 to learn more.
