Even in an urban area, there are lots of edible and medicinal plants available for the taking, and a North Versailles workshop will offer tips for harvesting and making the most of this bounty.
The Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve will welcome learners for an event that will introduce edible and medicinal native plants that are common backyard species. It will explore how they have been used in the past as well as how they are utilized today, and this activity is part of the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania's educational extension programming.
During the two hour long workshop, the attendees will find out how naive plants like Joe Pye weed, snakeroot, pokeweed and Indian hemp can be used in the kitchen, and the participants can ask any question they have. They will learn how to tell edible types from those that are toxic, and the organizers asked that anyone who is interested sign up ahead of time.
As a function like this will introduce species that can be used as food, it's often important that the registrant learn how to properly identify them in the field. A brochure printing company can prepare Booklets that make this a lot easier, and they can be distributed to each person who takes part.
This introduction to urban and suburban foraging will be on offer on August 28th. It will start at 10:00 am.
