Thanks to support from Tree Pittsburgh, a North Versailles area farmers’ market will be distributing saplings free of charge next month.
Each household is welcome to pick up two trees, and they will be small enough that they can be taken home in a car or small truck.
The organizers of the activity believe that a canopy of healthy native shrubs and trees can provide food for wildlife, help prevent erosion and flooding and bring a touch of beauty to an urban landscape. The trees will be free, and it is strongly recommended that anyone who plans on taking advantage of this opportunity registers their interest ahead of time.
Several species are slated to be given away, including eastern redbud, kousa dogwood, river birch, sycamore, hop hornbeam, and other species. They will be planted in two-gallon pots, and as they will be between two and seven feet tall, they may need to be staked until they are strong enough to grow straight on their own.
By helping to bring a touch of green to the area, this sort of activity can be an easy way to do a good turn for the environment. Stationery printers can prepare sheets with tree planting and care tips, and these can help the sapling get off to a good start in their new homes.
This chance for the public to get some free trees for their yard will be on offer on October 10. The giveaway will begin at 2:00 pm.
