While fall is usually thought of as mushroom season, they can often be found growing abundantly in the springtime too. The area around North Versailles is home to many species of fungi, and the Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club and Allegheny Land Trust are offering local “fungi-philes” a chance to explore and learn more about these organisms.
The organizers have put together a day of mushroom hunting on Sycamore Island for anyone who is interested. The group will travel to the location on the Rachel Carson, which is operated by Allegheny Cleanways Tireless Project and will depart from the Verona Public Docks.
Once they arrive at the island, the attendees will be welcome to explore and collect samples of any fungi they find. Once the collection portion of the morning is over, the specimens found will be identified and discussed.
This event is open to all ages, and children are welcome so long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult. A brochure printing company can prepare pamphlets and other materials for an event like this that will give area mushroom hounds a chance to learn more about its organizers and what they do.
The boat will be setting sail for the island at 9:00 am on April 13. Tickets are $20 each, and children who are under the age of three can participate free of charge.
