For the third year in a row, the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance is hosting a Connoquenessing Creek Cleanup Celebration.
Now a popular waterway for kayaks, the creek was rated the second most polluted of America’s waterways back in 2000. It remained in its deplorable state until 2012, when the Alliance’s cleanup mission began.
The first two celebrations have dealt with 85,000 lbs of trash and around 900 tires. This year, the focus will be on the 15-mile stretch from Butler Athletic Field to Forward Township Baseball Field.
Volunteers will meet at the Beacon Hotel, at 231 Beacon Rd. Renfrew. No fewer than 13 separate volunteer cleanup positions have been identified, so there is something for almost anyone who wants to help. Those with canoes or other small boats, as well as those with trucks, are particularly desired.
Events such as this one are a valuable opportunity for local businesses to gain positive publicity. Providing incentives to employees to volunteer, donating cleaning supplies or food, as well as paying for printing services to advertise the event, can increase name recognition and garner goodwill throughout the community.
The cleanup will take place 8:00am – 5:00pm on August 23rd. All volunteers receive lunch, provided by Fox’s Pizza, and a t-shirt. Additionally, they are invited to a celebration party complete with food and live musical performances after the cleanup. To sign up, contact Christina at alleghenyaquaticalliance@hotmail.com.
