YSU bids farewell to long-serving president

The Youngstown State University Board of Trustees is saying goodbye to its president.

Outgoing president Jim Tressel has been serving Mahoning Valley and the university for decades. His last appearance at a trustee meeting was in early December where he read from a list of accomplishments that he and his staff were able to achieve over the nine years of his reign.

In his last report, he stated:

“I just can’t thank this team enough because they’ve worked, believe me, they worked. They’ve rolled their sleeves up and they wanted to make a difference for our students, and they put the time in and the effort in and I can’t thank them enough.”

While Tressel was at the helm, the university experienced increased retention and graduation rates, a burgeoning Honor’s College, accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, and a growing endowment. Tressel was able to improve the university’s standing in the community despite several challenges, such as financial strains.

Tressel and his wife worked to help the university even before he became president. A resolution was passed by the board in appreciation of the Tressels for their significant efforts and distinctive contributions to the university. Such resolutions can be shared on documents that feature Letterheads.

John Jakubek, the board’s chair, feels that Mr. Tressel’s legacy will be focused on the work he did for his students.
