Work underway at Lancaster playground

Lancaster's Kiwanis Club recently broke ground on a new playground they will build in Hunter Park.

The new facility will be designed to accommodate people of all abilities and ages, according to an article on the Kiwanis website .

The superintendent of Parks and Recreation, Mike Tharp, said the Hunter Park location will feature the most equipment in any of the city's parks. He noted there are 28 parks in the city, and all have some equipment. However, the playground that will be built in Hunter Park will be the only one of its size.

The initial footprint will be an area 40 by 50 feet, and the possibility exists that more can be added to it at a later date. Slight inclines and ramps will be part of the layout, enabling people who use walkers or wheelchairs to access the area. Tharp said the new area will be a “truly all-access playground.” He added the department wants children with differing levels of ability to play together, and he also wants older people who might have mobility issues to be able to join their grandchildren.

Tharp said that a number of factors make Hunter Park the perfect place for a playground like this. The area is flat and undeveloped, it does not lie in a flood zone, and it is adjacent to a bike path.

The park could open as early as August, and officials can use banner printing to celebrate the opening of projects like this.
