Upcoming ArtWalk features 1870s artists

An artist who wowed critics nearly 150 years ago will be celebrated in the city’s ArtWalk 2017.

In June 1871, a Lancaster shop called Tuthill’s Book & Fine Art Store, located on Main Street, displayed a still life of fruit that Cincinnati art critics said was as good as anything being done anywhere in the country. In August 1871, more works by the artist were on display again at Tuthill’s, as well as in Brock’s Drug Store.

The artist who won such high praise was Cadurcis P. Ream, who, along with his brother Morston, went on to win national and international acclaim for their work, though they are largely unknown today. However, ArtWalk 2017 will give people a chance to see original paintings by the Reams, and learn about their lives, when it puts on a ‘Ream Revisited’ exhibit as part of ArtWalk.

The Ream exhibit is only part of the fun of the ArtWalk. During the event, the downtown streets are open only to pedestrians, who can listen to live music as they view works of art. Restaurants and food trucks will take part, and vendors will offer locally-made craft items.

ArtWalk 2017, including the Ream exhibition, is scheduled from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm this Friday, July 21. The Ream paintings are in the Georgian Museum on East Wheeling Street.
