Street gets a spring clean in time for reopening

Lancaster's Main Street reopened on Monday, May 19, and a group of volunteers spent the Saturday before cleaning up the downtown.

David Scheffler, who is with Destination Downtown Lancaster and is event coordinator of the Special Improvement District, said approximately 75 volunteers came out to help on Main, Columbus, and Broad Streets, as well as alleys and other downtown areas. The cleanup day is the fifth annual event devoted to improving Lancaster's appearance.

Scheffler noted the event was supposed to take place April 26, but was postponed so it was closer to the reopening of Main Street. He said the volunteers were able to work more easily without traffic on the street, although the temperatures, which were in the 40s, were a bit hard to take. Work started at 8:00 am, as volunteers pulled weeds, swept streets, washed the windows in vacant buildings, and spread 120 Bags of mulch.

In addition to individuals, groups also volunteered their members. Among those were the local Kiwanis, Brownies, the Sherman Rotary club, and several church groups, who felt the day was like spring cleaning their home.

In preparation for other community events, Lancaster officials could work with a flyer printing company to get mailers out to the community so they can schedule the time they want to work on the cleanup.
