After being closed for almost two years, the Copeland Pool, located at the Lancaster Camp Ground, is open again.
According to an article in the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette, the pool reopened on June 11, drawing people trying to escape from early summer heat. According to Cherie Koch, who manages the pool, the venue has been busy ever since it opened, and she said she was “thrilled” by the response.
A snack bar called the Maple Leaf is part of the pool complex, as is a storage house. The pool was built in 1920 by the Columbus Boys Club to provide an exercise venue. It was open part-time in 2014, and was closed all of 2015. Some equipment still needs repair, as does a sidewalk that edges the pool. In addition, the pool still has to be brought up to code so that it complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Cherie Koch notes that there's more to running the pool than people might think. The paint, for instance, is a huge expense: it takes 14 gallons at $72 per gallon to cover the pool once, and it needs two coats. The water to fill the pool is also expensive, as are the chemicals to maintain it. Despite this, Koch says she hopes to keep the pool open until Labor Day.
