Mount Pleasant may be set to light the night

Mount Pleasant, a natural landmark that stands above Lancaster, could be illuminated at night, if a proposal to light the sandstone bluff goes through. The idea was proposed by Lou Varga, a community leader.

Varga argues that the mountain has great historical significance, and is an authentic link to the city’s past. He notes that Wyandot Indians found relief in the shade cast by the mountain, as have European settlers, and current residents. He also says Mount Pleasant differentiates Lancaster from other nearby communities.

The current plan would use private capital to install the equipment and lights, with public money being used to pay for electricity going forward.

LED lights that can be programmed would be installed on poles in Rising Park, which lies directly beneath the mountain. If white lights only are used, the cost to buy and install them, and train park employees to use them, would be between $40,000 and $50,000. If color is added, costs would increase to about $75,000 to $85,000.

The park system would pay the electric bill, which would be about $970 per year if the lights are on 12 hours daily in color, while white only would be $600. However, it is likely the lights will not be on that long.

Park commissioners want to hear from residents, and have set a community meeting for September 20, from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Olivedale Senior Center.

Projects that impact entire communities can benefit if officials create Flyers to explain details of the proposal.
