Crafting matryoshka, which are also known as nesting dolls, is a folk art that hails from Russia, and Lancaster’s Wendel Center for Art Education has made plans to host a workshop that will see the public create a set of their own.
This workshop will introduce the techniques that have been traditionally used to make matryoshka, and the participants will also learn about other Russian crafts. There will be two separate sessions on offer, with one being for kids ages 5 to 12, and the other reserved for older kids and adults.
During the workshop, the group will discover the history of these nesting dolls and how they have come to be considered an artform. Each student will be offered an opportunity to make their very own set to take home, and they can choose from a traditional looking design or another theme.
The instructors for this hands-on class will be Dallas Rienschield and Lisa Schorr, and both members and non-members are welcome to reserve a seat. Promoting this sort of function can be a snap with help from a local poster printing company.
This introduction to the art of making matryoshka will welcome learners of all ages on February 6 at 145 E. Main Street. Tickets start at $25, and anyone who would like to sign up for the activity is welcome to do so.
