On a Saturday morning well before Halloween, baseball teams gathered to the sound of Christmas carols to play a benefit tournament for Columbus's Nationwide Children's Hospital.
The tournament was played on October 11, and featured teams of 6 to 12-year-olds, who comprised 10 teams that came from Lancaster, Baltimore, Berne Union, and Millersport. The tournament was hosted by the Berne Township Baseball and Softball Association.
In order to participate, all of the players had to give an unwrapped gift; these will be presented to Children's Hospital at the holiday season. The association's treasurer, Jolyn Pugh, said it really wanted to encourage children to learn to see that not every child can play ball, and that some may not be able to go home for Christmas. She added that association members “wanted them to see the importance of giving back”.
Pugh said their effort had apparently worked, as parents reported their children were excited about picking out the gifts they would donate. She added that the children who play in this league benefit from in many ways, including from the time the community and parents give to the games, and from the organizations that donate funds. This makes it especially important for the players to understand what it means to give back.
Event organizers could work with a poster printing company to create colorful, holiday-themed Posters that mention the tournament, to get ready for next year.Get a Free Quote for Posters
