On September 13, hundreds of Lancaster residents turned out to volunteer as part of Community Care Day, an annual day of service to Fairfield County that is also a fundraiser for United Way.
A total of 56 separate projects benefited from the volunteers’ efforts, among them Maywood Mission and the Salvation Army.
Volunteers from Snyder and Company and the Fairfield Medical Center spent part of their time pulling weeds from in front of Communication Action. Snyder’s Linda Sheridan said she and others from the company were glad of a chance to get outside for a day and spend time helping others. At Bremen’s Howell Park, Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities employees spent the day painting baseball dugouts. One of the board’s employees, Julie Bruckelmeyer, revealed that at times she has needed help, and was grateful to be able to give back to the community that supported her.
Steve and Judy Root are the co-chairs of United Way’s 2016 campaign, and kicked off the campaign by speaking of the importance of volunteering. Steve Root read a quote that called volunteering the “ultimate exercise in democracy”. Elections are held each year, but by volunteering for activities and organizations that are important to them, people vote each day about the type of community they wish to live in, Root said
