Lancaster gears up for annual festival

The Lancaster Festival is on its way, and the city's getting ready to party.

The annual celebration of arts and culture runs for 11 days, and features an eclectic mix of music, art, and events geared specifically for the kids.

One popular component of the festival is the art walk, a tradition that dates back decades. Downtown Lancaster shuts down so that people can examine works of art and enjoy music as they walk the streets. Among the acts on the bill this year are the Midtown Men, who know all the songs from the 1960s, as well as Live Wire, an AC/DC tribute band in the world. Opening the festival this year is Humming House, a Nashville-based bluegrass band that proved popular with attendees last year.

Festival organizers aim to gear events toward families, so that all performances are suitable for people of all ages. Ken Culver, the festival's executive director, said a highlight for children is the Major Arts for Minors series, which teaches kids a number of skills, from how to perform pantomime, to how to play percussion instruments.

The musical highlight of the festival, as it is every year, is the Lancaster Festival Orchestra, which comprises professional musicians, some of whom come back every year from across the nation.

This year, the festival opens July 20 and runs through 31. Organizers of events like these can create Banners to enhance them.
