Lancaster fireman receives recognition

A Lancaster firefighter has won a significant honor from the state.

The Ohio State Fire Marshall awarded Captain Slade Shultz of the Lancaster Fire Department the honor of “Ohio Fire Officer of the Year” this month.

Graphic design is often used to incorporate honors like this into official Forms and Stationery. Captain Schultz is a third-generation firefighter who also volunteers with a number of local nonprofit organizations. He is also an adjunct instructor at Hocking College, teaching fire and EMS subjects, and is the EMS program director at Ohio University Lancaster | Pickerington.

Schultz was a graduate of Ohio Fire Executive Class #13, and used his training in fire administration to help develop and implement such measures as developing run cards for the Lancaster Fire Department. Run cards are a mechanism that briefly outlines the response to be used in different types of emergencies and fires. They specify the equipment and fire companies to be dispatched. He also developed emergency medical services (EMS) protocols for Fairfield County, a year-long process.

Schultz was also instrumental in the creation of a statewide registry of convicted arsonists. His efforts resulted in the passage in 2013 of a law creating and maintaining such a registry, which has proven to be a vital tool for fire investigators' use.

Members of the Lancaster Fire Department took to Facebook to praise Schultz, saying the city is lucky to have such a dedicated professional serving the city and its residents.
