Lancaster Festival Orchestra schedules preview

The annual Lancaster Festival, a huge event that spans 10 days in the summer, and draws audiences and performers from around the area and across the country, is hosting its preview event very shortly.

Gary Sheldon, the orchestra's conductor, has extended an open invitation to interested musicians in the area to come and play with the orchestra at the preview, which will feature some of the music planned for the festival. Ken Culver, the executive director of the festival, said some people have been playing together for years, while others are new to the area, or are still students. There is no rehearsal planned before the preview concert, but sheet music is available at the festival office.

Among the pieces on the playlist are selections from Disney’s ‘Frozen’ and ‘The Little Mermaid’, along with popular marches by John Philip Sousa, and the ‘Stars and Stripes’. Classical selections include Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart, the Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Brahms, and a Bach concerto.

The Lancaster Festival Orchestra will present its festival preview this Saturday, May 20, at 1:00 pm, at the River Valley Mall. This is the fourth year the orchestra has given area residents a festival preview, and admission is free.

By working with a flyer printing company, organizers can create a program of the selections and give some info about the composers.
