Mount Pleasant is a bluff that towers almost 300 feet above Lancaster, making it a landmark for the city. Discussions of lighting the bluff at night have been ongoing, and recently the Lancaster Board of Park Commissioners approved the lighting plan, according to an article in the Columbus Dispatch.
The entire cost of the project, $52,000, has been covered by an anonymous donation to the Friends of the Lancaster Parks, a nonprofit organization.
Mount Pleasant lies within Rising Park, which is just to the north of Lancaster's downtown. People often climb to the top of the bluff to take in the spectacular views, which include the city and the county fairgrounds.
The idea of lighting the bluff has both supporters and detractors. One of the proponents is Varga Communications' president Lou Varga, a community leader who proposed the idea in concert with others. He believes the light will be good for the city, county, and central part of the state. Varga added that the light shining on the bluff will be white and “nothing funky.”
In addition, the lights will only be used 70 nights of the year at the most, usually on weekends, and special occasions. They will be turned off during the spring and fall when birds migrate.
Projects like this are important, so officials might consider working with a flyer printing company to create an explanatory letter for Mailing to residents.
