Mental health is a vital but often overlooked component of overall health. A workshop in Lancaster will help people learn about these issues.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing is free, and teaches course participants how to identify, respond to, and understand the Signs of mental illness, as well as disorders caused by substance abuse. The training course will teach people the skills needed to reach out and help support those who may be developing these problems. The training is meant to provide skills to people who deal with the problems at their initial stage, who then go on to help connect the person in crisis to someone who can provide appropriate care.
Course attendees will learn the ALGEE action plan, and how to apply it. ALGEE stands for:
A – Assess the person for risk of harm or suicide
L – Listen without judgment
G – Give information and reassurance
E – Encourage the person to seek out the appropriate professional help
E – Encourage the person to try self-help, and any other support methods available
Anyone who is interested in the course should register soon, as space is limited. Lunch will not be provided. The course is scheduled for September 10, from 8.30 am until 4.30 pm, at the City Council Room on South Broad Street in Lancaster. Poster printing can be used to create visual aids for events like this.
