Food drive in Lancaster a huge success

The Salvation Army and the Eagle-Gazette teamed up for a food drive held June 2nd, and it was a rousing success.

According to a news article, Phil Tamayo, a major in the Salvation Army, and Michele McTeague, the organization's resource development manager, worked with the newspaper that hosted the drive.

The Monday of the event was a gray, rainy day, but the weather didn't dampen the spirits of the donors or of the sponsoring organizations, which collected enough food to fill the Army's van more than three times over. The goods collected will go to the local food bank.

McTeague said there's always an increase in demand for food at the beginning of the summer, when subsidies given to help children purchase food during the school day are no longer available.

There were several cash donations in addition to food, with residents saying they were glad to help out. They also felt those who had enough should be willing to share with those who were hungry. Tamayo added that the generosity of the residents meant the pantry could reopen.

The Salvation Army has more fundraisers planned for the summer, and could work with a poster printing company to create decorative artworks for posting around town. It might even be able to sell these colorful Posters to raise additional funds.
