This spring will mark the “end of an era” for three elementary schools in Lancaster. According to a May 18, 2015 news article, there are five elementary schools under construction, but students and parents have fond memories of the schools that are closing.
Both Cedar Heights Elementary and South Elementary closed for good at the end of May. Medill Elementary will be torn down and a new Medill built on the same site. During construction, Medill's students will attend East Elementary, which will also close at a later date. All the school will have new names.
South Elementary School opened April 1, 1851, and was soon outgrown. A second school opened in 1875, and when that too became antiquated, a third South School opened in 1931. Students who attend South School will go either to Tallmadge Elementary or Mt. Pleasant, depending on where they live.
Cedar Heights received its first pupils in 1915, and like the others, was soon too small for the number of students. A second Cedar Heights was opened in 1939. Today's students will transfer to Gorsuch West Elementary once construction is finished.
Similar stories are attached to the other schools, as are the memories, as well as the nostalgia over losing such important parts of the community.
Lancaster school officials might consider working with a brochure printing company to create a booklet that tells the history of the entire school district, as well as featuring stories about each of the schools, along with pictures, to save this important community history.
