On Saturday, July 11, officers from 10 police departments escorted a procession of school buses filled with kids.
The children were not in trouble though – they were on their way to K-Mart.
The Boardman K-mart was the chosen location for a back to school edition of Shop with a Cop. Usually a holiday event held in December, Victoria Allen saw the need for children going back to school to receive assistance obtaining clothing.
After conceiving the idea of a Shop with a Cop, back to school edition, Allen contacted local law enforcement and had little trouble enlisting their participation. She then coordinated the efforts of Saint Dominic’s Church and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28, who partnered to bring off the event.
The result was 40 youngsters, ranging from kindergartners to seniors in high school, shopping along with police officers for school uniforms, socks, and other clothing essentials with a $40 per child budget. With the exception of Chaney High School, Youngstown City School students are all required to wear uniforms.
While simply giving the money to the children’s parents would have been easier, this way the kids got an opportunity to interact with police in a positive manner. Raising money for programs such as this involves a variety of Print company products such as flyer and poster printing.
Prior to embarking on their shopping trip, the students and the police officers enjoyed breakfast at St. Dominic’s. Get a Free Quote for Print
