Westbury student experiences inner workings of government firsthand
William McNeill, a student from Westbury High School, recently had a chance to see and experience the inner workings of the state government up close.
Together with Prajanan Senthilkumar of Manhasset High School and Schreiber High Schools' Joshue Curtis, McNeill spent a day shadowing Jack M. Martins, a state senator from the seventh district.
The students were participating in the Students Inside Albany conference, annual event sponsored by the League of Women Voters New York State Education Foundation. The goal of the conference was to demonstrate to high school students the importance of taking part in a representative government, and to increase students' awareness of what their role is in such a government. The event also aimed to give students the tools needed to live up to their roles as responsible citizens. The Foundation can use printing services to spread the word about the conference and get more students involved in the future.
During their day in Albany, the students got to follow Senator Martins around, seeing firsthand how he spends an average day at work, when the Senate is in session. Martins shared some of experiences with the students while they shadowed him. The three also go to sit on the floor in the Senate Chambers and witness debates and votes on current bills in action.
