Westbury local goes up against Bobby Flay
For Andrea Bergin, from Carle Place, near Westbury, a dream has come true. Bergin appeared on a recent episode of ‘Beat Bobby Flay’, a cooking competition show that airs on the Food Network.
The format of Beat Bobby Flay has two chefs compete against each other first, with Flay choosing a secret ingredient for each to use in the dish they create. In Bergin's case, Flay chose prosecco. She and competitor Jeremy Fogg, a pastry chef from New Orleans, then had 20 minutes to prepare their dish.
After the dishes are made, a panel of judges taste-tests each and chooses the winner. Bergin's creation was a "deconstructed" cheesecake featuring whipped cream and prosecco glazed berries.
The creators of cooking competitions can use booklet printing to put together a collection of recipes for the dishes made on the show.
While Bergin did not win against Fogg and missed out on the chance to go up against Flay, she did make history on the show. She is the only nonprofessional chef to ever get to compete on the program. Bergin had originally submitted for a different program, but the producers ended up calling her in for Beat Bobby Flay.
Although she filmed the episode in May of last year, it did not air until earlier this month.
