Westbury and Long Island make time for pets
Long Island Cares might be known for collecting food and providing it to people in need, but the organization also helps out pets too, and the month of February marks the start of its annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge.
The goal of the drive is not only to collect food for people's four-legged companions, but also to encourage local legislators to get involved.
So far, two area legislators are signed up to collect donations for the drive. Senator Phil Boyle's office will be collecting donations until February 28, while senator John Flanagan's office will accept donations until the end of April.
Local charitable organizations can use flyers to spread the word about their food drives and other community events. The flyers can contain information about the types of products being accepted and where to drop them off.
During the drive, Long Island Cares is accepting a variety of pet food products and other necessities, including 5lb or larger bags of dry cat or dog food, canned dog or cat food, cat litter, and food for other types of pets (such as fish, rabbits, and reptiles). The pet food is distributed through Baxter's Pantry, which the organization began in 2009. Since that time, it has given out more than one million pounds of pet food to pets all over the island.
Food drive drop off locations are located throughout Nassau County, including the DPW, at 1194 Prospect Avenue in Westbury.
