Syosset's young entrepreneurs win medals in state championships
Syosset High School's chapter of the Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) is having a record year.
DECA is a global organization that strives to train up the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs. It focuses on areas such as finance, hospitality, management, and marketing.
This spring, the Syosset club sent the largest number of students to the state championship in Rochester. More than 80 Syosset students went, and the club ended up bringing home 47 medals in a variety of competitions. A total of 20 of the school's students placed in the top 10 honors for several categories. Justin Kang and Niv Skidan, working as a team, took first place in the Ethics Team Decision Making and Business Law categories. The club could use stationery printers to create certificates recognizing the members who participated and earned medals at the conference.
The high school's chapter was also recognized by the state for the growth of its membership, and for the community service efforts and promotional campaigns it led this year. Several of its officers were inducted into the state Honor Society too.
Arjun Mehrotra, the president of the Syosset DECA and one of the officers named to the Honor Society, praised the hard work of his fellow students.
Along with winning big at the state conference, 33 Syosset students qualified for the International Career Development Conference, which took place in Nashville at the end of April.
