What's Happening in Syosset, NY…

Syosset students make cold calls for a cause

Members of the Syosset High School student government are dedicating two evenings in October to making the world a better place for people living with cystic fibrosis.

The students will make phone calls to families living in the Syosset school district in an attempt to raise funds for cystic fibrosis research. In the U.S., more than 30,000 people in the US are living with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that is usually life-threatening. Another 10 million or so are carriers of the gene for cystic fibrosis, although they do not have the disease themselves.

There is currently no cure for the disease and the median age of survival is currently only 37-years-old. While there is still a long way to go in terms of researching a cure, new advancements have led to the development of drug that controls the disease in about 4% of patients.

Syosset students can use poster printing to spread the word about the phone-a-thon, which has been dubbed "call for a cure". They will be calling people on October 20 and 22. The donations collected during the fundraiser will be given to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which is the main organization for cystic fibrosis research.

The high school government has been doing the phone-a-thon for more than 20 years, since 1993. In that time, students have collected more than $200,000 in donations.
