Syosset students display their creative side

Seventh graders at Syosset's H.B. Thompson Middle School recently had a chance to show off their creativity.

Students in the Project Beyond program and Research Skills classes at the middle school participated in a Maker Faire Day. Originally inspired by the Maker movement, Maker Faire Day is an educational program for schools across the U.S. When a school hosts one, students are encouraged to create new products out of discarded or unused materials.

Organizers of the Maker Faire Day also sought to connect the program to another project – National History Day. Students who worked on projects during the fair were encouraged to connect their projects to National History's Day theme for 2016, which is ‘Exploration, Encounter, Exchange’. The school could have used banners to promote Maker Faire Day and National History Day.

To start their projects, the students were handed boxes full of various materials, ranging from egg cartons to floppy discs, and from tape to plastic bottles. Students were encouraged to make use of the materials in their boxes and to collaborate with others around them to create an invention or work of art. As part of the theme, they explored new ideas, encountered challenges, and exchanged information and ideas with each other.

Projects created during the Faire included several model cars, robots, marble run structures, and a model of the Statue of Liberty.
