What's Happening in Syosset, NY…

Syosset student recognized by Johns Hopkins

After a series of rigorous tests, usually reserved for students much older than himself, Darius Fan, an elementary school student in Syosset, has been named as one of the brightest students in the world.

Fan participated in a talent search, sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. The search involved taking a series of tests designed for students in higher grade levels over the course of a year.

During the contest, middle school students typically take the ACT or SAT, which are usually taken by high school juniors and seniors for college admission, while students in grades two through six are given either the Spatial Test Battery or the School and College Ability Test.

The talent search is open to students in more than 60 countries, and more than 33,000 participated for the 2014-2015 year. Of those students, only 30% or so were invited to a Center for Talented Youth ceremony, during which they were recognized for their potential and their performance on the tests.

Fan's school, Village Elementary School, can use stationery printing to make a certificate to recognize his achievement. Along with being recognized at the award ceremony, Fan and other students are eligible to participate in the summer courses offered by the Center for Talented Youth.

A number of additional award ceremonies are scheduled for the Long Island and New York City area this month. A ceremony will take place at Columbia University on May 16, another will be held at SUN New Paltz on May 30, and a third is scheduled for May 31 at the University of Rochester.
