Syosset student is a National Merit Scholar

A student at Syosset High School recently showed that hard work really does pay off.

The National Merit Scholarship awarded Wanlin Li with a $2,500 scholarship during its most recent awards cycle.

Li, who plans on studying and pursuing a career in mathematics, was one of 2,500 Merit Scholars chosen by the program. The award recipients come from a group of more than 15,000 finalists in the scholarship program.

Another 4,000 winners will be announced on June 6 and July 16. By the end of the year's competition, a total of 7,500 students will have received scholarships. The total award amount will be more than $31m.

Organizers of scholarship programs can use stationery printers to produce certificates for the award winners.

Students who receive the $2,500 scholarship, such as Li, are selected from a group of finalists in their state. The finalists are determined to have the right combination of skills, accomplishments and potential for success in college. The number of scholarship recipients per state is based on the number of graduating seniors in that state.

The judges who choose the scholarship winners look at a variety of factors when making their choices, including the difficulty of subjects studied, grades, standardized test scores, recommendations from an official at the student's school, and a student's involvement in the local community and in school activities. Students need to write an essay for consideration for the award.
