What's Happening in Syosset, NY…

Syosset residents voice opinions about park project

Hundreds of Syosset residents turned up at the public hearing for the new Syosset Park in early May.

That might sound like good news for the developers of the project, but only a few residents were in favor of the size and scope of the project.

Since the meeting, the Town of Oyster Bay has decided to extend the comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the project's development until the end of July.

So far, the plan for the development is to build more than 600 residences, a theater, two hotels, office space, stores, and restaurants.

Towns that have major development plans in the works can use brochure printing to explain the scope of the project to residents and to clarify how the project will take environmental concerns into consideration.

For the Syosset project, people were primarily concerned about the environmental remediation of the site. A portion of the site once housed an industrial firm, Cerro Wire. Another part of the site was once a landfill that was on the Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund list.

Also at issue for many resident was the fact that the developer guesses that nearly 250 school-aged children will move into the newly constructed homes. Residents expressed concern that the school district is already too crowded.

So far, the developer has responded to the concerns expressed by residents and has agreed to have the sites independently tested.
