Syosset dance team competes in national finals
The varsity kickline team from Syosset High School had a chance to strut their stuff in front of a national audience recently.
The team traveled to Orlando, Florida for the National Dance Alliance Nationals Competition, where they showed off the three routines they had been practicing for much of the academic year.
The Nationals Competition features teams from nearly 30 states, who have the opportunity to perform in six dance routine categories. The Syosset team participated in the small varsity hip hop, small varsity jazz, and large varsity kick categories.
To prepare for the competition and to help reduce the costs of travel and costuming, the varsity dance team formed a booster club for the first time. The booster club put together several fundraisers for the team. The money raised went towards hiring choreographers and paying for the costumes worn.
Teams that are fundraising can use poster printing to let people know of their programs and efforts.
To get to the finals, dance teams first need to pass a preliminary round. The team's three routines all made it past the preliminary round and into the finals. After the preliminaries, the team applied any feedback and comments they received from the judges and used that information to improve their routines.
Their work and effort paid off. The large kick group took fourth place in the finals, the small varsity jazz routine came in eighth, and the hip-hop routine earned third place.
