Syosset 12th grader takes home award for science

A senior student at Syosset High School recently earned a top honor in science and is a semifinalist for one of the most esteemed high scholarships across the globe.

Abrar Nadroo was given the Ezra Levy High School Science Award. Every year, up to four students in high school receive the award from the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. To be considered for the prize, a student needs to perform a chemistry-focused research project that demonstrates a high level of investigation and a high quality education in science. Printing services can help the association produce certificates for each of its award winners.

Nadroo's project was "Toward a Novel Treatment for Corneal Fibrosis: Establishing a Biochemical Model of the Corneal Keratocyte." Corneal Fibrosis concerns scarring of the eye, and is a result of disease or injury. The work was presented during a banquet at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City at the beginning of June, as part of the award reception. Dr. Henry Lee, PhD., delivered the keynote speech on "Recent Advancements in Forensic Science" at the banquet. At the banquet, Nadroo received a $200 check and a plaque.

Nadroo is also up for the Davidson Fellows Scholarship awards, which gives between $10,000 and $50,000 to students who have finished significant projects in categories such as literature, technology, philosophy, and science. If he makes it to the finalist round, he will be asked to attend a reception in Washington, DC.
