Style starts young in Syosset
Two elementary-age students in the Syosset School District proved that you don't have to be fully grown to have a sense of style by winning the ‘Katie Woo Super Stylish Contest’ last month.
The two students, Erika Ahn, a kindergartener at South Grove Elementary School, and Kate Lin, a second grader, each drew an outfit for Katie Woo, the main character in a series of early reader chapter books.
Capstone Publishing, which publishes the Katie Woo series, ran the contest and encouraged kids to create a unique outfit for the title character in honor of her fifth anniversary.
Ahn and Lin gave their designs to Denise Bento, the Library Media Specialist at South Grove Elementary, who submitted the entries to the contest. The submissions were reviewed by judges, including Tammie Lyon, who illustrates the books, and Fran Manushkin, the author of the series.
Part of the reward for winning is seeing the designs in an upcoming Katie Woo book, to be published in the spring of next year. In the meantime, the girls could use poster printing to enjoy a full-size version of their entries at home.
Ahn's design, a rainbow colored, tiered ruffle skirt, took the top prize in the ‘Best Pant/Skirt’ category while Lin created a pink, floral kimono, which won ‘Best Outfit’. Along with seeing their designs in a future book, the two girls won their own Katie Woo Book Club Kits, which came with six titles in the series, a pencil, and a bookmark.
