What's Happening in Syosset, NY…

Study of horses comes to students near Syosset

Starting with the Spring 2015 semester, students at Long Island University's Post campus, near Syosset, will have the opportunity to pursue their love of horses in an academic program.

The university is launching an Equine Studies course. The program will feature four tracks, including Equine Health, Equine Education, and Equine Management. The fourth track will take an interdisciplinary approach. Aside from being an appealing program to business or marketing students who love horses, it may also help them to gain a foothold in pursuing a career in the equine industry.

Students in the program, which is being offered as a minor, will be able to take courses in teaching horseback riding, equine anatomy, equine nutrition, and facilities management, along with a range of other disciplines. Those on the interdisciplinary track will be able to combine courses from the three other tracks.

Being a minor means Equine Studies can be taken on in conjunction with another subject, with science, technology, and PR courses being possibilities. When a program is new and initially offered as a minor, schools will often consider using poster printing to advertise it to students already attending the university.

Students in the newly created program will be able to benefit from the campus' North Shore Equestrian Center. The center has been providing students with riding classes for a number of years and is also home to the college's equestrian team.
