On November 11, a number of veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq took a break from their studies at Dowling College near Lindenhurst on Long Island to help unload more than 2,000 Thanksgiving turkeys at area food banks.
The turkeys were donated by the supermarket chain Stop & Shop as part of its Turkey Express program. Including the 2,400 turkeys donated to Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank, and the Island Harvest Food Bank on the day, the program will donate almost 21,000 turkeys to hunger relief programs across New York, New Jersey, and in New England.
Hunger is an issue across Long Island, and about one out every eight people need emergency food every year. Nearly 40% of those who receive it are under the age of 18. Organizations such as Long Island Cares and the Island Harvest Food Bank can use newsletter printing and social media to get the word out about their mission and to get more support.
The Turkey Express program is not the only program the local foods banks are running this holiday season; local radio station WALK 97.5 is running a two-week food drive,
‘Thanks for Giving’, that comes to an end tomorrow. The goal is to collect 20,000lb of food. Collections will take place at King Kullen stores throughout the area, and the drive will conclude with a live broadcast tomorrow from 5:00 am until 7:00 pm on the radio station.
