On October 2, Lindenhurst teachers donated $5 to the Denim Day project. In exchange for their donation, the teachers are able to wear jeans to work, along with pink ribbon pins.
Since 1996, people have been putting on jeans for a good cause every October. Lee, a denim company, has been sponsoring ‘Denim Day’ since then. The goal of the program is to raise money to find a cure for breast cancer. Under the leadership of Lisa Nelson, teachers at Lindenhurst Middle School have been participating in Denim Day for 18 years.
Nelson expanded the program at the middle school this year. It was not only teachers who were able to contribute, but students joined in too. Since most students already wear jeans to school, they showed their support by wearing pink. Students did not have to chip in $5 to participate. Instead, they donated any spare change they had during lunch. Nelson and other teachers could use poster printing to let students know about Denim Day and to encourage their participation.
Since the event started in 1996, Lee has raised $93m. The money goes to the American Cancer Society, which is currently the largest voluntary health organization in the country.
This year, Lindenhurst Middle School raised more than $950 during the event. Student contributions totalled around $200.
