Lindenhurst schools celebrate reading through First Book Program

Teachers and PTA members of the Lindenhurst public school system are once again invited to register for the First Book Program at the end of the month.

This is the second time the Lindenhurst school community has participated in the program. At the beginning of the academic year, John Mansfield, a middle school teacher, led the campaign. He collected registrations from teachers, administration, and custodial staff. The First Book program ended up delivering three pallets of Books, worth about $20,000, to Lindenhurst. The Books were distributed to students from preschool through Grade 8.

Mansfield has partnered with the school's PTA for the second iteration of the First Book Program. The goal is to collect 2,000 registrations from teachers, staff, and members of the PTA. If the school district collects that many Flyers, the program will deliver 13 pallets worth of Books, or about 22,100 new Books, to the schools.

Sponsored by the New York State Union of Teachers and the American Federation of Teachers, the progream seeks to bring grade-level appropriate Books to needy students. It also aims to help students develop a love for reading.

Registration for Books is only open to staff of Lindenhurst schools or to members of the PTA or SEPTA. Parents who are not PTA members are invited to join. Registration Forms need to be filled out and returned by April 29.
