Two Lindenhurst women been honored by the New York State Assembly for their efforts regarding breast cancer prevention and education.
The two women, Linda Bonanno and Donna Cioffi, founded First Company Pink, which has advocated for changes that would aid women in the fight against breast cancer. One of the program's the organization fights for is Shannon's Law, which would require insurance companies in the state to lower the age requirement for covered mammogram screenings to 35 (from 40).
The organization also had its hand in encouraging the NY State Assembly to proclaim July 6 as "got checked?" day statewide. The purpose of "got checked?" is to educate younger women about the risks of breast cancer and to encourage early intervention and detection.
State assemblies who are recognizing the work of citizens can use Print shops to produce documents and certificates for them.
During the recognition of Bonanno and Cioffi, Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre of Babylon presented the pair with Copies of the "got checked?" resolution, which was passed by the assembly in April with an unanimous vote.
Both Bonanno and Cioffi are survivors of breast cancer.
Speaking to the Lindenhurst Patch, Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre praised the two woman:
"Donna and Linda have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to breast cancer prevention through education, and the "got checked?" campaign will undoubtedly save lives.”
