What's Happening in Turnersville, NJ…

Students at Birches elementary School in Turnersville were recently treated to a special musical event.

Three performers from Musicopia came out to the school and facilitated a session called “Jazzing it Up With the Harp”. As part of the lesson, they learned about the history of this instrument and also how it has been used in modern jazz. They were also taught about the history of the bass and drums. Along with this, they experienced popular music from performers such as John Coltrane, which was played by the three musicians, after which they were invited to try the instruments out for themselves and experiment with what they can do.

Leon Jordan Sr., Gloria Galante, and Chris Coyle also played music that was more familiar to the pupils, such as ‘The Rainbow Connection’ and ‘Linus and Lucy’. The visit to the school by the trio was funded through a mini grant from the Washington Township Education Foundation.
