Residents of Turnersville and the rest of the state as well, will now have access to an app that will let them identify invasive species quickly and easily.
The New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team has set up both a website and an app that will allow people to determine if a plant, animal, or disease causing organism they come across is a member of an invasive species. It also makes it simple to report it if they do find one.
To use the app, all a person needs to do is use the photos and other information provided to determine what they have found. If it is on the list of invasives, they can use their phone to take a photo and then send it in. Their phone will automatically include their GPS location and the date so it can be included in both the statewide and national databases of plants or animals that are invasive.
The information gathered will be analyzed and then used to help landowners, the public, and the government protect the environment, and also to help shape and drive sound environmental policies. Print companies can produce printed reports of the data collected using apps like this. These can be distributed to members of the public so they can see how their efforts have made a difference.
