Pets from all over southern New Jersey, including many from Washington County, came to Turnersville on Saturday, December 13, to meet Santa and have their pictures taken with the jolly old fellow.
Santa came to Turnersville's Regional Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center to help in a fundraising event on behalf of FURever as Friends.
According to FURever as Friends' president Sharon Bednar, there was a “phenomenal turnout” for the event, which she described as “wall-to-wall animals”. More than 75 creatures, both dogs and cats, were accompanied by their owners in seeing Santa, and in the process raised over $775.
FURever as Friends, which benefited from the funds generated, is a nonprofit organization based in Gloucester County. It serves people of all ages in Camden, Salem, and Gloucester counties and provides an opportunity with its S.M.I.L.E. program.
The initials stand for ‘Silent Mentors in Literacy Education’, and refer to the fact that FURever as Friends takes cats and dogs into schools and libraries, encouraging those children who lack the confidence to read aloud, or who have difficult reading in general, to read to one of the animals. Many children find it easier to read to an animal than to a person, which helps them learn to love reading.
FURever as Friends could consider working with a flyer printing company to create handouts advertising its next fundraising event.
