The recycling program at the Bernardsville Compost Facility is now accepting Styrofoam.
Clean expanded polystyrene (EPS) items with the recycling symbol of No. 6 can now be dropped off at the facility. Items accepted include foam sheets that can be used for insulation, crafts and model-making, and sound proofing; foam Packaging; and disposable coolers and ice chests. All labels, Tape, and other foreign materials should be removed from foam items before they are dropped off.
The Bernardsville Compost Facility will not accept food service trays, foam egg cartons, packing peanuts, or white foam cups. Flyer printing can be used to provide more details on acceptable items for recycling at such facilities.
The goal of this new part of the program is to prevent expanded polystyrene from getting into landfills by collecting recyclable items and making them into new materials. Equipment at the Long Hill Township Department of Public Works is used to compact and process the Styrofoam.
Residents of Bernardsville can use the facility with proof of address or any valid form of identification. Individual permits per load are required for commercial vehicles and contractors.
The Bernardsville Compost Facility is on Pine Hill Road and is accepting Styrofoam from April through December on Saturdays (except for holidays) from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm. It is open during the winter on select dates.
