Concord store shelves could see newly approved beverage

Concord’s first legal distillery will soon have its first bottles of moonshine for sale in liquor stores.

Southern Grace Distilleries, which operates out of the Warren C. Coleman mill, received federal approval for the label last month. Following this, the company needed to wait for final approval from the State of North Carolina.

The distiller’s first product is called Sun Dog 130 Uncut North Carolina Moonshine, and will be the Cabarrus County’s first ever legally made liquor of this nature. A banner printing service could be used to publicize the initial batch, creating a buzz and getting the distillery off to a positive start.

Southern Grace, which has a storefront in downtown Concord at 20 Cabarrus Avenue East, will donate a portion of the proceeds of each bottle of Sun Dog sales to North Carolina animal shelters. According to the distillery’s director of communications, Christopher Schuler, the public will have a say in which shelters will receive the funds by going to the Southern Grace Distillery website and registering a vote for their favorite shelter.

The company, which was launched last year, is using a 113-gallon still to brew its moonshine and what was formerly the Warren C. Coleman mill. Southern Grace is owned by Leanne Powell, company president; Perry Morris, the company’s distiller; and Thomas Thacker, Southern Grace’s operations manager.
